D-Day, or “Operation Overlord”, was the name given to the June 6, 1944 Allied invasion of Normandy in northern France by troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other countries. By June 11th the beaches were secured, though that came at the price of over 4,000 Allied lives. The success of the invasion led to the liberation of Northern France and the ultimately the surrender of the Germans in 1945.

RICHARD “DICK” RUNG: Storming Normandy

US Navy Motor Machinist Mate 2nd Class Richard “Dick” Rung served  in Europe and the South Pacific during World War II. He was aboard LCT 539 as it attempted to land at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944  otherwise known as D-Day.
