On August 4th, 1790 the first Congress authorized the construction of 10 vessels to prevent smuggling, enforce trade laws, and provide aide to mariners in distress. The Coast Guard mission is to protect the public, the environment and the U.S. economic interests along the nation’s coasts, waterways and in any maritime region as required to support national security. We hope Gary Nelson’s story below inspires you to dig deeper and learn more about the history and importance of the United States Coast Guard.
